FOTA proposals

The FOTA has come up with a set of changes to make F1 better and to also reduce the expenditure involved for the competing teams. The proposals include a reduced, fixed price for buying engines, gearboxes and the KERS system. What I’m wondering here is if manufacturers can sell engines, gearboxes and the KERS system for a set price, why can’t they manufacture, and race them at a set price? Reportedly, some teams are against the idea of budget caps. My point is budget caps have a great potential to maintain technological innovation, that has been a preserve of F1 thus far, but still allow for controlled expenditure. Engineers love to challenge themselves and innovate and if you give them free reigns to develop their car within a certain amount of money, they would still love it. In a short while, we could well see them take the efficiency of innovation to unprecedented levels. I believe they would rather buy into this idea than seeing their hands tied with regard to what they can develop in their car.

Nice post. However, I've got a couple of curious queries.

1)Don't the manufacturers produce engine and other components of powertrain?

2)To whom do they sell the components?

The manufacturers do manufacture the powertrain systems. But it's believed that they do so at very high costs. If you take Ferrari, for example, they sell their engines and stuff to Toro Rosso. McLaren sell theirs to Force India and Brawn GP and Renault too sell theirs to Red Bull.

Then, what are you meaning thro' this post?

It's the cost that is the problem. If, unlike now, they can go racing within set budgets, both technological excellence and the future of the teams can be saved.

I feel stringent budget norms will hamper the teams' research. They'd be restrained from coming up with new ideas. What do ya say?

But what's in place now is the FIA has restricted most of the things (engines, suspension) that were being developed in F1. They've drawn a box around the car and say that no aero part can be outside of the box. They've frozen the engine development. There is no development in the tyre side too because of monopoly. Do you think budget caps will be any worser than this?

I fear F1 might not carry the power-packed excitement anymore. Very awful :(

If you're referring to the era of insane horsepower fights, yup, I'm afraid it's gone. But the general buzz of F1 is still there for the taking. If it's to be there in the future, F1 must not become a spec-series like GP2 or A1.
